Earflap hats have appeared in northern clothing for centuries. The modern Ushanka is better understood as a design shaped by several regions, winter lifestyles and military clothing systems rather than a single invention. During the Finnish-Soviet Winter War from 1939 to 1940, winter equipment became a very visible part of military life. After the war, Soviet winter uniforms were redesigned and Ushanka became an important cold-weather hat.
The phrase fish fur is an ironic way to describe artificial or inexpensive fur-like material: fish have no fur, after all. Today, better textile technology gives us another option. The Ushanka featured in this article uses 100% polyester faux fur, not mink, fox or rabbit skin. It offers a soft fur-like feel without using animal fur.
I have worn this style of hat myself, and my most immediate impression was that my head became noticeably warm after a short time. Personal warmth varies with weather, wind, layering and activity, so this is a personal experience rather than a universal promise. If you want a classic northern silhouette, soft faux fur, and a material choice that avoids animal fur, this is the direction I currently prefer.

Ushanka connects Russia, Finland, Hokkaido, the Nordic region and many other cold-weather places through a shared question: how do we stay warm while moving through a particular landscape? A modern classic can respect the history of northern clothing while choosing a 100% polyester faux-fur material that is gentler toward animals.
An Ushanka is a winter hat with earflaps that can be tied up or lowered to protect the ears, jaw and chin.
No. The provided product information describes it as 100% polyester faux fur, not mink, fox or rabbit skin.
It can be worn with the flaps up for styling or lowered during cold fronts, wind and longer outdoor activity. Actual warmth depends on weather and personal conditions.
